A multi-talented designer has created a buzz around Bassetlaw after transforming an old rusty gate into a special sculpture - made from historic tools.

Kenny Roach, 56, who originates from South Shields, has been working on the gate, located just off Wharf Road, at the rear of the Rum Runner pub, Retford, since March.

The work of the dedicated artist has been the talk of the town - so much so that he has been forced to finish the design at night - as passers-by regularly distracted him.

“It first began when the landlord of the pub gave me a gallery at the back of the pub and it just progressed from there,” Kenny said.

“I offered to do something with the gates and I decided to get people from the area to donate old tools.”

“The gate has everything from fly wheels, to chains, to horse shoes.”

“It has been greatly received so far and people seem excited.”

“It has consumed my life.”

Landlord of the Rum Runner pub, John Noyes, is delighted with the design and said the original idea came back in October 2013.

“It is absolutely fantastic,” John said.

“The gate was very old and was in need of serious repair.”

“I think there is something like 700 to 800 tools on it.”

According to Kenny, there isn’t much that he can’t do, from woodwork to sewing, being creative is what has been drilled into him from a young age.

“The gate is steeped in history and sentiment because the tools are from all over Retford,” he added.

“It has even caused one man to write a poem about it and an artist has painted a picture.”

The sculpture is set to be officially unveiled on August 25th.
