'We're not likely to get a cinema'

ROWS continue to rumble on at Worksop Town Hall over whether a cinema will EVER be built.

Labour councillor Simon Greaves asked the council at Tuesday's meeting when the long awaited development is likely to be built.

But despite assurances from deputy leader Coun Terry Yates that the council is making 'good progress,' Coun Greaves said he doubts a big screen will come to the town.

In his answer, Coun Yates outlined four things which have to happen in order for work to begin on the Turner Road development:

l North Notts College have to vacate the car park they are currently using by 31st March 2009;

l Henry Boot have to finish negotiating with the Environment Agency over drainage on the Turner Road site;

l Notts County Council needs to approve a design scheme by Henry Boot for the roundabout on the junction of Blyth Road and Carlton Road.

l the council has to wait for solicitors to pass an agreement to separate the cinema and Tesco developments in order to extend the planning life of the cinema arrangements.

"I am glad to say one of the key frustrations and constraints we have been working through, the issue of planning matters, are now sound and in place," Coun Yates said.

"Planning has not been derailed," he added.

But Coun Greaves described the council's response to his question as 'outrageous' and said the answer led him to believe that Worksop would not be getting a cinema next year.

"It seems to me that the answer given shows that Bassetlaw is not likely to get a cinema certainly this year and I would say it's unlikely to see a cinema being built next year either," he said.

"I think this is the first time we have been informed we are unlikely to get a cinema now. We have been promised that work would begin immediately."

At the same meeting questions were also raised about when Tesco will be moving in at Clinton Maltings.

Coun Yates said that Tesco will not be in a position to conclude the agreement and start work until the same outstanding issues are dealt with.

"I would then expect a swift start to commencement of build," he added.
