Villagers urged to back A614 safety campaign

COMMUNITY leaders in Bilsthorpe want residents in the village and the surrounding area to back their campaign to improve safety on the A614.

Campaigners have been calling for safety measures for a number of years, but were spurred into action after February's horror crash which claimed six lives.

Teenage pals Ross Johnson, Josh Drinkwater, Jay Thompson and Thomas Hudson all died in the tragedy as well as Edwinstowe couple Christine and Jonathan Bray.

Bilsthorpe parish councillors have arranged a meeting for Friday 10th July to discuss a new action plan to deal with problems on the road.

Sherwood MP Paddy Tipping has pledged to back the campaign and was due to attend the meeting, although that is now unlikely because of his recent heart attack.

But councillors have urged residents from Bilsthorpe and other local villages not to be put off by Mr Tipping's absence and to come out in force.

Council chairman Robert Bradbury said he was expecting representatives from parish councils in Eakring, Rufford and Edwinstowe to attend the meeting.

He said: "We want as many people as possible to come along and it's nice to see councillors from other parishes wanting to get together and do something."
