VIDEO: Poignant messages left at scene of tragic sledge accident

FLOWERS and poignant tributes have been left at the site where a 16-year-old girl tragically died in a sledging accident this week.

Francesca Anobile, of Mosborough, Sheffield, was one of four girls on a makeshift sledge which crashed through wire fencing at Rother Valley Country Park on Tuesday this week.

Francseca died from her injuries and three other girls travelling with her on the sledge were also injured, including 16-year-old Nikki Burns, from Waterthorpe, who is currently being treated at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

The two other girls were named locally as Cherie and Laura.

In one letter left at the site, Francesca's best friend, Laura Simpson, said: "I don't need to write down all the great times we have had had together, don't worry. I will never forget - I know you won't either."

She added: "I miss you and love you forever and always."

Karl Battersby, strategic director for development and environmental services at Rotherham Council, spoke to media at the scene this morning (Wednesday).

He offered his deepest sympathy to Francesca's family and urged people to put their safety first in the current weather conditions and to take care when playing in the snow and ice.

"Our thoughts go out to the family involved in this tragic event and I would encourage people coming to the park especially with the forecasts for more snow, to not come here for sledging and tobogganing purposes," said Mr Battersby.

Francesca's family issued a statement today, which read: "We are devastated by the loss of Francesca who was a beautiful, witty and intelligent and young woman with everything to live for."

"She was set for an outstanding academic career and had an unbelievable work ethic."

"She was loving and supportive to everyone she came in contact with, whether friends or family, and was a friend to all. The whole family are extremely proud of her."

And reporter Helen Mullins visited the park this morning. To view the video, click on the green button above.
