Troop tax reduction 'would not be legal', says leader Quigley
HOT on the heels of the first-ever Armed Forces Day, a Bassetlaw councillor has called on the authority to charge reduced Council Tax for troops serving abroad.
At a full council meeting held in Retford last week, Coun Steve Burton told leader Mike Quigley that offering a 25 per cent reduction would be a 'practical' way of showing support for the armed forces.
He said: "As an ex-member of the armed forces, I was pleased that Bassetlaw Council would be supporting the 'fly the flag' campaign which acknowledges and supports members of the forces in the courageous work they undertake."
"Furthermore, it demonstrates the council's commitment and support for our armed forces who serve in hostile situations worldwide," he added.
Coun Quigley said he applauded Coun Burton's request, but said he could not promise to deliver on reducing Council Tax for the troops.
"I agree and would like to see us being able to give support, but it's not legal to make reductions in Council Tax, especially during these current times," he said.
"However I will contact the CLG (Communities and Local Government) to see if there's a way we can offer this small recompense."
