Cycling in North Anston - Pedal Ready give tips on how to stay safe cycling on snow

Many cyclists are carrying on as usual in the snow, so cycling cooperative Pedal Ready is reissuing its snow advice.

“Generally, cycling is often an easier way to get about than driving in wintry conditions since you can always get off and walk for a while,” said Pedal Ready’s Carl Beresford.

“Many cyclists just walk to the main road then cycle from there. Off road tyres and letting a little air out might give you better grip. Also, remember to take food and waterproofs, and wear layers rather than a thick coat that will limit your movement.”

“And get in touch with us at www.pedalready.co.uk if you want a fee practical advice session, thanks to Rotherham Council.”

The advice when cycling on snow is to brake slowly and carefully and steer as much as possible with your body.

Gauge the surface – snow is usually ok, but ice is always tricky, while slush can be bumpy and unpredictable. Get off and walk if you’re in any doubt. And watch for grooves caused by car tyres – these can be less slippy but moving in and out can be difficult.
