Teddy bear wounded in Blidworth lightning strike
A BLIDWORTH mum is thanking her lucky stars after her daughter's teddy bear was the only casualty in a lightning strike at their home.
Michelle Calladine (34) was just metres away from the strike when it hit the top of their house, on Lyndhurst Avenue, at around 3pm on Monday.
She says the strike travelled down the outside of the house into her nine-year-old daughter Elle's bedroom, sending plaster flying across the room.
Michelle said: "It was the loudest bang, I thought it had burst my ear drums. It sounded like a car had hit the front of the house.
"It was only when I got myself together when Elle came home that we realised her teddy Spangler had been burned on his arm and leg."
And Elle wasted no time showing off singed Spangler to her friends and teachers at Blidworth Oaks Primary School yesterday.
Michelle said: "Elle thinks it's great, she couldn't wait to take her bear to school and show off. One boy asked her 'can I have your autograph if you are in the paper?'"
Michelle added that the lightning had caused a great deal of damage – blowing up their boiler and short circuiting cable equipment.
"It's a real nightmare –– it seems to have affected everything," she said.
"It was such a glorious day on Monday –– and all of a sudden it just turned –– we even had hail stones.
"I was looking out of Elle's window and it was just so black. It was only after everyone said to me I could have been hit that I realised how lucky I was."
