Sutton's Carsic estate - a 'haven for criminals'?

NEIGHBOURS on Sutton's Carsic estate say they are fed up of criminals and vandals using an overgrown area of Brierley Forest Park which backs onto their homes.

Jeffrey and Helen Kemp, who live at the Oval, say the area should be a pleasant place for visitors and householders — but has instead become a magnet for yobs.

"Our fence has been broken in two places and we were robbed about three weeks ago," Mr Kemp said.

"We also have an issue with the gate because it is so loud. We have had to attach something to it to stop it banging because you never get any peace and quiet, especially when the kids are on holiday.

"Apparently there is funding available, but I don't know when it will get done."

And householders say Ashfield District Council, which is responsible for the park, needs to do more to ensure the grass is cut regularly because criminals are using the undergrowth to hide stolen goods.

Nearby neighbour Elizabeth Godber says: "They come at funny hours in the morning — they leave stolen goods in the long grass and then come to get their stuff back.

"When the grass is long, people also throw dog bags into it — we have been trying to get something done for years."

A spokesperson from Ashfield District Council said yesterday: "Ashfield District Council Enforcement Officers will be undertaking patrols in the area and take appropriate action in relation to any dog fouling incidents.

"Our new Community Protection Service will be launched on 27th July and Community Protection Officers will be working seven days and equipped with powers including confiscating alcohol from under 18-year-olds and issuing on the spot fines for litter, graffiti, fly tipping, cycling on a footpath, offences against dog control orders and drinking alcohol in a designated public place.

"Officers will be conducting patrols in the area and working with police and residents to tackle the problems.

"A site assessment will also be undertaken and the gate will be replaced over the summer.

"We would like to thank residents for bringing this to our attention and they can report any problems by calling 0800 183 84 84
