See video of traveller's funeral as hundreds attend

HUNDREDS of mourners from across the country descended upon Worksop's Priory Church on Tuesday.

The funeral of William Forrest, 65, saw scores of cars, including 10 silver Rolls Royce in the funeral cortege, attend the funeral.

Police were drafted in to ensure the smooth running of the funeral.

They set up a number of road blocks and diversions to ensure the hundreds of mourners could access the Priory Church safely.

Mr Forrest's cousin Steven McGuire paid tribute to 'a true gentleman'.

"William was a good man who loved to have his family and friends around him," he said.

"He's lived in Worksop all of his life and you only have to look at the number of people here today to see how well loved he is."

"He will be very sorely missed and I am pleased to give him a good send off."

But already questions are being asked about the police presence and the disruption caused to the town's roads.

One Stubbing Lane resident who wished not to be named contacted the Guardian amidst the traffic jams directly via our website.

The resident said: "I am writing to express my annoyance at the travellers' funeral, which required Stubbing Lane to be completely blocked off for over an hour and a half."

"It led to people being unable to get home or to work. What if someone had needed to go to the Hospital? Would an ambulance have been allowed through?"
