Ollerton auntie delivers baby into the world

WANNABE midwife Sarah Jolly had the perfect chance to practice delivering a baby . . . when she helped to bring her sister's 'early bird' son into the world by following instructions over the phone.

Quick-thinking Sarah (24) leapt into action to deliver the bundle of joy after being told an ambulance would not reach her sister Jenny's Ollerton home to take them to hospital.

And with the help of the stunned sisters' mum Deborah, who was receiving instructions over the phone from hospital staff, bouncing baby boy Michael entered the world shortly after — weighing in at a healthy 6lb 14oz.

Says Sarah: "We tried to call around to see if someone would be able to take her in but we couldn't get anyone. I called the hospital back and they said to look and see if I could see the head, but before I could her water broke.

"They were giving my mum instructions on the phone and she was telling me what to do. I'd read lots of books when I had my baby so I knew about checking to make sure the chord isn't around the baby's neck and that sort of thing.

"I wasn't really thinking at the time, I could just hear everyone shouting in the background. An ambulance arrived about half-an-hour later and they checked him over and cut the chord.

"The worst part was that I'm frightened of blood, so we had to get rid of everything straight away afterwards!"

Now Sarah, of Maid Marion Way, Ollerton, says the experience has inspired her to go on to accomplish her dream of becoming a midwife.

"I didn't realise what I'd done until afterwards," she said. "At first I was just saying 'oh I delivered my sister's baby' –– but later on I actually thought about it and what I'd done!

"I'd always wanted to do a midwifery course but went into nursery teaching instead and thought if I can cope with the sick and mess of that I could move on to it later!

"I'm going for an interview to do an access to midwifery course at The Dukeries College this week and hopefully I can get into it from there."

And delighted sister Jenny says she is more than grateful her sister was on standby and ready to lend a helping hand.

She said: "I was just lucky that the people that were with me could help. Michael is doing really well, he's getting into his feeding routine now and he's always alert and looking around. We can barely get him to sleep now if he wants to be heard then everyone knows about it!"
