New law to tackle the young smoking
Linda McAvan
Speaking to mark national No Smoking Day Yorkshire Euro MP Linda McAvan has called for tough action to ban marketing aimed at recruiting young smokers.
She is the lead MEP for a new European law which aims to make smoking less attractive to young people by standardising packages and banning flavourings.
Yorkshire and the Humber has a higher percentage of smokers than any other region in the UK,” she said.
“It is estimated that 13,710 of our region’s children aged between 11-15 are regular smokers with another 39 children starting every day.”
The draft law aims to tackle the last remaining method of advertising to customers - the box itself.
