MP disgust at online slur of Worksop folk
BASSETLAW MP John Mann has expressed outrage at entries on an internet dictionary site which defines Worksop as "a horrid town populated by pikeys and losers."
Billed as an explanation of slang and urban language, the dictionary goes on to describe the town's centre as "unutterably horrid. Teenage parents abound. If Notts were to be given an enema, guess where the pipe would be put?"
The site, which the Guardian has chosen not to name, invites net surfers to offer their own definition of whatever word they want.
Their entries are then posted on the website for anyone online to see.
Bassetlaw MP John Mann said he had looked at the site and was "disgusted" with what he had seen.
"I think this is pathetic, puerile stuff by some people who obviously have too much time on their hands," he said.
"I'm not for censorship so I wouldn't want it removed, but I just hope none of my daughters ever brings home the sort of sad little nerds and twerps who put this sort of thing on websites."
"We should treat this with the contempt it deserves and ignore it – they obviously don't get out much."
The site claims that Worksop is "home to the cheapest heroin in the UK, which is the only industry to take off since the coal mines shut".
It goes on to claim that Worksop is "a small north Notts town where the inhabitants seem to believe that travelling two miles towards Retford will result in falling off the edge of the earth".
In another section of the dictionary, the obscene swear word "W*****" is defined as "one from Worksop".
Roger Ranson, Bassetlaw Council's head of economic development and tourism said he hoped Bassetlaw residents would ignore the site and its messages.
"It sounds as if it is the work of A.A. Grundi to me," Mr Ranson quipped. "Although I'm suprised that he knew how to use a computer to access the net."
"On a serious point, there are wonderful attractions within Bassetlaw like Clumber Park, Mr Straw's House, the Harley Gallery, beautiful countryside and villages to name just a few."
"We need to do more to promote these and not to continually knock the place, which is proving an attractive environment for people to live and work in."
The Guardian attempted to get a statement from the website's operators but received no response.
