Langold dad took his own life

A LANGOLD father-of-two who had only been married three months took his own life, a Nottingham inquest heard.

Chris Platt, 28, of Laburnum Road, was found dead in woodland on 11th January.

The body of the former Portland School pupil was found by a woman walking her dog on School Road.

Coroner for Notts, Dr Nigel Chapman, recorded a verdict of suicide and cited hanging as the cause of death at the inquest on Friday 30th January.

Chris had only married his partner of 12 years, Penny, in October last year, and she broke down in tears as she spoke from the witness stand.

On Saturday 10th January, Penny had gone to work and Chris had stayed at home. In the afternoon, he sent a text message at 4.15pm, saying 'How long until you get home'.

When Penny returned home, Chris had seemed 'quiet but alright' and Penny went upstairs to watch television.

He left the house at about 9.30pm and when he had not returned the next morning she reported him missing.

Pc Shaun Snowden, who is based at Harworth Police Station, was called to woodland off School Road at about 8.30am on Sunday 11th January.

He told the inquest: "If Mr Platt left the house at about 9.30pm, we would expect him to have died in a short space of time after that."

The inquest also heard that the post mortem had revealed a level of 125mg of alcohol in his blood – about twice the legal limit for driving.

Dr Chapman told the family that from his experience, he would expect Mr Platt to have died before midnight.

When recording his verdict, Dr Chapman added: "For whatever reason, he did an act to take his own life. I express my deepest sympathy to everyone involved."

"Everyone who knew him will have difficulty coming to terms with this, asking 'why?' and 'if only'."

Mr Platt's family declined to speak to the Guardian following the inquest.
