‘IT’S PORN. IT’S DISGUSTING AND IT IS NOT FOR CHILDREN’
ANXIOUS parents pleaded with the Worksop Guardian this week to take action against a ‘pornographic sex DVD’ being shown in primary schools - and we listened.
We attended a meeting on Wednesday night where dozens of worried parents turned up to plead with primary school headteachers across the district to ditch the ‘disgusting DVD’.
And now Worksop is leading the charge to get the DVD banned from being shown in Bassetlaw.
For the full story and photos of the emergency meeting, pick up this week’s Worksop Guardian.

Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 06:50 PMT Bladen - I echo your sentiments exactly, very eloquently put. Worksop87 - these teenage pregnancies in Nottingham - where were all these teenagers when the the sex education lessons in secondary school were being taught or the free condoms were being handed out? Just proves a point that learning how to draw a penis or put a condom on doesn't actually change teenagers attitudes when the opportunity arises. £300 million spent over 10 years hasn't changed a thing. The sad fact is that deprivation, low self esteem, upbringing and values etc have far more of an impact on whether a teenager is sexually active than anything they learn at school. Teaching it en masse younger and more explicitly is not the answer.

Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 10:06 AMI am flabbergasted at the comments of worksop87. “What a joke this story is???!!!” No, this is real. Actually most parents that do want the best for their children are genuinely amazed that it’s not a joke. As parents we put our trust in our schools and education authorities – a respect that we’ve been brought up with. But it’s a sign of the times that, no, you can make no such assumptions. Positive parenting is actually about sticking your nose in and finding out exactly what our teachers are teaching our children. For our children’s sake. And that is awkward. Who wants to be seen as the ‘demanding’ or ‘interfering’ parent. But let me encourage Worksop parents that it is far better that you do stick your nose in and speak out – don’t be put off by those that think it’s ok to show sex in the light of a fun game of chase around a bed. Watch the dvd on the internet – type in ‘living and growing channel4’. It’s on the teachers tv website. It’s not all bad – in fact there’s a lot of good stuff in there for our kids. But what is the world coming to when we are suggesting to kids of 5-7 years of age that touching themselves makes them feel ‘really nice’ and to 7-9 year olds that sex is ‘exciting’? I am not a prude. There are things that our kids need to know and there are things that they certainly do not. The law as it stands in the Education Act of 1996 clearly states that sex education is not compulsory in primary schools, but if it is taught pupils should “learn the value of marriage and its importance for family life and the upbringing of children”. It makes me wonder that if the government had spent its money more wisely in recent years rather than wasting millions on a failed Teenage Pregnancy Strategy, it could have been reviewing what materials have been used in school which have encouraged the exact opposite effect – sex without consequences. This is a massive wake-up call – well done to the Worksop Guardian for giving it the publicity it needs so that we can restore the trust in our education authorities. And don’t shoot the messenger – I am very grateful to the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children for bringing this nationwide issue to Worksop. Now Worksop has an opportunity to lead the way. Let’s go for it. It is not a story about SPUC; it’s a reality about parenting and protecting our own children. Not all schools in Worksop do show this DVD, thank goodness (mine doesn't). But do your kids play with kids from other schools? (mine do). No one escapes the effects of this. Let’s get it banned.

Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 05:50 PMNeal - No I don't agree that 7 year old should see that, of course they shouldn't, but my understanding is that they don't. My childs school have assured me that that part of the dvd is not watched until the last year, which is fine by me. I'm angry that this story has made the news as to be honest, in my opinion, I think there are a lot more worthy stories happening around here at the moment. And why wernt us parents that are ok with how our kids are taught sex ed sought out for the guardian?? Teen pregnancy is a huge problem in notts (I should know!) and if our kids are armed with the facts then they stand a better chance of making the right choices. As for 'hiding', I'm not quite sure what your implying but there is no way in this world I want my child to have any connection with this story. Luckily we live in a country where we can freely give our opinions - Whether we agree or not!

Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 09:58 PMDoes "worksop87" really believe it is right to teach 7 year olds how to fornicate? If so can you explain your thinking. You seem very angry about this matter - what exactly are your motives? I would maybe give you slightly more respect if you didn't hide behind a pseudonym. The use of this cartoon porn never has been obligatory and hopefully in my lifetime never will be. If anyone other than a misguided teacher had shown my child this material I would insist the police prosecute them for child abuse. Yours, Neal Pond. NB Not hiding my identity - why are you?

Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 01:42 PMIf your school CHOOSES to run sex ed classes then maybe as a parent you should READ the letters your child brings home. The schools send home a letter to inform parents about this-Don't tell me thats wrong as I have recieved one! If you're not happy to let your child watch this then why not SAY SO rather than getting the media to say what you could just say to the school. It makes me laugh that this has even made it into the paper! Did you actually let the school know you didnt want your child to see this. Obviously a lot of parents were happy for their children to get educated and learn, I see the bandwagon has now started saying that children as yound as 7 are watching this.Actually the DVD is in different sections and different ages see different parts-I found that out in 2 minutes with speaking to my childs school-perhaps you should do the same. As for the SPUC, I see their view on same sex couples is outdated. To bring a group with such hatred into our town is irresponsible. I'm more worried of what THEIR views will do.

Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 08:13 AMworksop87 Firstly Get YOUR facts right before commenting. Primary schools do not have to teach sex ed by law at all. By law they have to have a sex education policy, but that policy can be NOT to teach sex ed if that school so chooses. Secondly just because SPUC are fronting this campaign does not mean that people are supporting everything else that SPUC does. You may be happy with these videos and if you want your child to see them that is your opinion and your choice, just as it is my choice not to let my child see them. However the reason the meeting was held was because most parents are not even aware of these materials being used in schools therefore they are not able to make an informed choice and only find out AFTER their child sees them.

Friday, February 11, 2011 at 10:57 AMThe Guardian is quite right to draw this to parents' attention, I was shocked when I saw what my kids were going to be shown - at Junior School! If I showed stuff like this to kids, it would be called grooming, and I'd go to jail!

Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 06:18 PMWhen researching the SPUC's (the society for the protection of unborn children) website, who are quoted in the Guardian, its alarming what they're saying. Do these people who attended the meeting ACTUALLY realise what they're supporting? I very much doubt it. By law schools DO have to teach sex ed. Get your facts right Guardian. And perhaps research the groups you are seemingly supporting.

Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 06:04 PMI am assuming that the Worksop Guardian have yet to see the alleged 'Porno' DVD, which is actually a cartoon. What a joke this story is, these are the exact parents that when their children roll up pregnant at 14 will be pointing their unemployed fingers at the schools. I'm disgusted that this story has been given space in the paper, there are a lot more important, and frankly interesting, stories out there. Shame on you Worksop Guardian and shame on the parents. If the schools are that bad then teach them at home or send them private.
