'It's a good cause to get behind'

IT'S MORE great news for the Guardian's adopted charity this week, as cheques from local organisations are flying in to bump up the Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice Appeal.

This week Graham Miles of Northfields Christmas Lights Charity Fund contributed 500 to the appeal on behalf of the street.

Over the last six years, residents of Clowne's Northfields have put on a spectacular show of Christmas lights attracting thousands of people across the region and raising a total of over 50,000.

The whole street deck their homes with flashing Santas, flying sleighs and fairy lights, much to the delight of visitors.

Donations are collected in buckets lined along the street and every year the charity spend days picking up additional coins that have been thrown into gardens.

Once every penny had been collected and counted, this year's grand total came to 9,524.18 which has been shared around local charities that benefit children.

Bluebell Wood are over the moon at being chosen as one of the beneficiaries.

"We are amazed at the variety of ways people raise funds for us, and every penny counts," said Helen Mower, community fundraiser for Bluebell Wood.

"The amount of money from Christmas fundraising has exceeded our expectations, and this was a special way to light up the lives of the children who will have use of the hospice."

"Thank you to everyone who was involved in this fantastic fundraiser."

Thanks also go to the Worksop Royal Antideluvian Order Of Buffaloes who presented a cheque for 220 to Bluebell Wood's volunteer fundraiser David Fish at the Boundary Inn last week.

"We raised the money through various raffles and have helped this charity in the past," said Boundary Inn landlord Mick Wright.

"We feel this is a very good charity to support because it helps both terminally ill and disabled children."

Dates for the diary for this month are St Patrick's Day (Thursday 17th March): The Night After The Day Before, starring Sean Wilson, Tony Mac of the McAleer School of Irish Dance and Emerald Irish Disco Show perform at Hatfield's Country Club, Ash Hill Road, Hatfield, near Doncaster.

A licensed bar and food will be available at the venue from 8pm until late. Admission costs 6.50. For tickets contact 01302 729902.

Also on the horizon is a sponsored swim in aid of Bluebell Wood where fundraisers – including members of your Guardian's staff – will be taking the plunge at Maltby swimming baths on 20th March.

It is vital that the funds keep coming in. If you're searching for ideas to raise money contact Helen Mower at Bluebell Wood on 0845 108 1579.

If you have a fundraising event planned in aid of Bluebell Wood that you would like featured in the Guardian contact reporter Amy Parkes on 01909 500500.
