Forum celebrates its 1st anniversary

BIRTHDAY treats were in store for the first anniversary of the Bassetlaw Over 50s Forum at Worksop's The Crossing.

It was the perfect opportunity for community members to get together with a cup of tea and slice of birthday cake to reminisce about an eventful first year.

Forum chairman Isabella Bicker said the special day was a great success and was good to celebrate the achievements of older people in the community.

”I can’t believe it has been a year since we started the Forum. It’s been hard work but we have hung on in there and very slowly our membership is growing,” she said.

”The cake went down very well and was completely gone by the end. It was great to look back on what we have achieved in the last year.”

The idea for the Forum came from a seminar on older people at The Crossing around two years ago, and the group has expanded steadily in the past year - now enjoying 55 members.

Isabella said the group was a way for older people to learn more about what’s available for older people in the community and provide them with the opportunity to really make a difference.

”Over the past year we have had some very interesting people to talk on a variety of subjects, from agencies such as A1 Housing, the PCT and the National Trust,” she said.

”We have also worked really hard to tackle problems and campaign for a new bus station in Worksop. We know it’s not going to happen overnight but we are still working to keep up the pressure,” she added.

”We have also liaised with Stagecoach to try to find out what’s going on and the last we have heard is that they are looking at a site on Eastgate near North Notts Arena.”

Isabella said the group’s next priority is to find out more about how Notts County Council’s proposed 33m cuts to services is going to affect people across Bassetlaw.

”Many of the cuts are aimed at services for older people, and even if they’re not going to affect is, we all know someone who it might affect,” she said.

”We are really trying to push for someone to come from the county council to talk to us to tell us what’s it all about.”

The Forum’s next celebration will be its Christmas Concert with pupils from Dunham Primary School at Retford Town Hall on Wednesday 16th December.

It is always looking for new members to join - for more information email isabella.bicker@googlemail.com or call 01909 489377.
