Former Creswell miners get compensation refund

FORMER miners at Creswell Colliery are to receive up to £200 in refunds as part of their legal mineworkers' compensation claims.

Graysons Solicitors of Chesterfield, together with the Legal Complaints Service, have agreed to return deductions made for union membership contributions.

Bassetlaw MP John Mann hailed this decision as a huge victory after several years of campaigning and said it meant miners would receive some long-overdue money.

"It's fantastic news and everyone should claim the money they're entitled to," he said. "Graysons are one of the first firms in the area to do this and they are to be congratulated for their initiative and integrity."

A Graysons spokesman said: "It is important to note that there is no automatic entitlement to a refund of union contributions and each case will be examined on an individual basis. The vast majority of our clients understand the postion and have no complaint."

"We are proud of our record of achieving recovery of compensation for mineworkers and their families."

Deborah Evans, chief executive of the Legal Complaints Service, said all law firms who have agreed to take part in this latest initiative were setting an example that she hoped others would follow.

"The lead shown by these firms is to be applauded," she said. "We welcome their recognition that excellent client care is an essential element of their business."
