Five drug dealers jailed for 20 years

FIVE Worksop drug dealers have been jailed for a combined 20 years – thanks to the successful Rat on a Rat campaign.

Acting on information from the public, Notts police went on a massive purge of the town, arresting scores of heroin pushers earlier this year.

The heaviest sentence handed down at Nottingham Crown Court last Thursday was four years and nine months given to David Jackson, 30, of Cresswell Street.

Judge Dudley Bennett also sentenced Mark Betts, 31, of Osberton View, to four years.

Alexander Middleton, 24, also of Osberton View was given three years and nine months, while Dean Lewis, 21, of Eastgate, got two-and-a-half-years. All four men pleaded guilty to supplying Class A drugs and were jailed by Judge Bennett.

Another man, Trevor Scott, 28, of Featherston Avenue, Worksop, appeared before Judge Michael Stokes in Nottingham on the same day.

Scott pleaded guilty to being involved in supplying heroin to an undercover officer called Gaz on 22nd January.

He was bailed for sentence and will return to court on 28th July.

Lee Carter, 20, of Sitwell Gardens, Worksop, pushed heroin to fund his own 50 a day addiction.

Judge Dudley Bennett heard yesterday at Nottingham Crown Court how Carter also admitted burgling a house in Matlock where more than 2,000 of property was stolen.

The court also heard how Carter would regularly steal from shops in Worksop.

He was sentenced to four years and nine months in jail.

Worksop police were pleased with the sentences and thanked the public for the role they played in the operation.

"This tremendous success of Rat on a Rat could not have been achieved without the help of the public, who have supplied us with valuable information," said Ch Insp Alan Capps.

Det Sgt Kevin Keane who led Operation Encounter which resulted in these successful convictions added his delight at the sentencing, but emphasised the importance of the role played by the community.

He said: "This case and the subsequent sentencing sends an important message to drug dealers, and should act as a deterrent to anyone contemplating dealing in drugs."

"It makes Worksop a better place. These were significant players in the dealing of drugs."
