Driver caught after a pursuit
A BIRCOTES driver who was twice the legal alcohol limit when caught by police after a pursuit near Harworth has been spared jail.
Matthew McInnes, 23, of Snipe Park Road in Bircotes, had gone for a drive to ‘cool off’ after an argument at a public house, Notts Crown Court was told.
McInnes admitted dangerous driving on Scrooby Road on 23rd May this year.
A judge told him: “People who drive as you did normally go to prison.”
But he had been saved by his previous good driving record and good employment record, as well as the fact he had a small son.
The court was told that when sober he realised what he could have done to other road users.
When McInnes pulled up in his Hyundai car on the A614 heading towards Blyth a police officer went to speak to him.
McInnes then suddenly reversed and turned back down Scrooby Road before being blocked off in a pub car park.
He then got out of the car and started to run from the scene, but was caught.
McInnes had since shown real remorse for his actions on that day, his barrister Harry Owen told the court.
Judge Philip Head told McInnes that he must have known he was over the alcohol limit. and that there were things wrong with his car, including a buckled wheel.
He was given a 10 month prison sentence, which the judge suspended for two years.
He was also ordered to complete 180 hours unpaid work for the community along with a four month curfew.
Because he was a nightworker, the judge permitted the tagged curfew to run from 12pm to 4pm Tuesday to Friday and 6pm to 6am on Saturdays and Sundays.
