DAY 17: Family and media await verdict
MEDIA interest in the murder trial of Neil Entwistle reached fever pitch today as the jury were sent out to decide the Worksop man's fate.
In court this morning a large sign reserved three benches for more than 20 members of Rachel's family who have arrived in anticipation of the long awaited verdict.
As the Matterazzo family and friends filled up one side of the court, across the aisle Neil's family members, Yvonne, Cliff and Russell, sat hoping that after two long years, today they will hear that Neil will be set free.
An extra bench behind them was reserved for any other family members but remained empty.
As the jury was sent out, the families piled out of court followed by the media scrum and a few American on-lookers that have followed the case from the start.
Yvonne, Cliff and Russell were ushered into a side room on the fourth floor of the building near to the court room while the mass of
Matterazzo's trooped down an adjacent corridor to wait in another room.
This morning the Worksop family did not have new shirts for Neil who appeared smartly dressed in a grey shirt and tie.
Everyday the family walk to the US court from their nearby accommodation and once again Russell carried their grey cool bag, which I assume contains lunch.
Middlesex Superior Court, a new building, has no dining facilities and no communal area for people to congregate.
Meanwhile in the belly of the office block, the windowless media room was a mass of cables and reporters on mobiles and laptops.
And with every new face that comes through the door, the first question asked, is always: 'How long do you think the jury will be out?'
The answer, we don't know. Nobody does. There is plenty of evidence and exhibits for the six men and six women to sift through provided by the prosecution.
And once again, for the second time since the start of the case, a request has been put in for more chairs in the media room as reporters take to the floor to file their copy.
At the front of the building, car parks are filled with media vans displaying satellite dishes that will be used to transmit images and reports from the case around the world. Photographers and camera teams have set up camp and a forest of tripods and spotlights can be seen.
All the while presenters pace the parking lot muttering the lines for their live feeds and gesticulating.
Entwistle himself has been whisked off to holding awaiting the verdict.
