Church trio are special guests at 80th party
THREE very special members of Langold's Christian Community Church are to be guests of honour at a party this Sunday.
THREE very special members of Langold's Christian Community Church are to be guests of honour at a party this Sunday.
The church turns 80 this year, and so do Langold residents Stephanie Wroble, Olwynne Simpson and Gladys Dixon.
And the Doncaster Road church, and the three octogenerians will all be celebrating their joint achievement at Sunday's birthday bash.
Church leader Cyril Lumley told the Guardian: "It's right that we should honour special members of our church. They have seen great changes over the past eight decades."
In 1924, the world was still gripped by the backlash of the Great War, which had ended six years earlier.
And as the world's athletes prepared for the Olympic Games in Paris, one nation was conspicuous by its absence, as Germany was banned from competing after the bitter conflict.
The Assemblies of God movement had its roots in Aston near Birmingham, with the first meeting held on 1st February 1924.
Now, the movement has gone global and boasts more than 50 million members worldwide, with around 50,000 based in the UK. (W40901/1)
