Bassetlaw Council in top 10 for efficiency savings
BASSETLAW Council has been ranked seventh among the country's councils in efficiency savings, according to an independently-published Local Government Chronicle Report.
The authority has been given a 10.3 per cent efficiency saving rating – something it has to declare to taxpayers – placing it in the top 10 in the country.
Coun Terry Yates, deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for finance, said the news was a triumph considering most houses in Bassetlaw fall in the Band A category.
"The benchmark for calculating figures was in efficiency savings for B and D properties. Given that the majority of properties in the district are in Band A, we have clearly done exceptionally well," he said.
"The high ranking is due to the dedicated way our council staff have acted to deliver the plans set out for improvements to our efficiency and effectiveness strategies."
"We are determined to continue the solid work in these areas and this will be reflected in further efficiency savings in the future."
Council chief executive David Hunter said some taxpayers might find it difficult to understand the savings and ask why their Council Tax is not lower as a result.
"The short answer is that if these savings hadn't been made, Council Tax would have been much higher over the years," he said.
"We recognise and accept that we are not the best and there is room for improvement. We continuously review what we are doing and looking at better, less costly ways of delivering local services."
