20,000 petition for a rethink over King's Mill cancer care

NEARLY 20,000 people have signed a petition urging health chiefs to rethink a controversial decision not have a satellite radiotherapy unit at King's Mill Hospital.

Chad revealed in May how the hospital had missed out on funding to provide the service because NHS Nottinghamshire County felt the demand was higher in Nottingham and that the current site at City Hospital had better access for patients countywide.

The news sparked anger among local campaigners who immediately began moves to put pressure on health bosses by launching the petition.

Since then 19,309 people have signed it and Beryl Perrin, who is a Sherwood Forest Hospitals Foundation Trust governor and Amazon Breast Cancer Support Group chairman, said: “Thank you to all the people who signed the petition and all those who helped get signatures.

“The response has exceeded all my expectations and is going to be handed in to the PCT in the coming week.”

An NHS Nottinghamshire County spokesman said it did not believe the unit, which would cost 1.5m each year to run, offered the best value for money at King’s Mill and that the money would be best spent elsewhere if it was not being used to capacity.
