103-year-old Esme Collins dies weeks after care home eviction

ESME Collins, the 103-year-old Worksop woman who became caught in a centre of a conflict over care home finances this summer, has died just weeks after her ordeal.

She was forced to move from Abbeymoor Nursing Home on Sherwood Road in August after bosses demanded an extra 100 a week in fees.

Barnby Court in Retford became home to Mrs Collins during her final weeks, but daughter Esme Simpson said her mum never truly understood why she had been evicted.

"How can you explain to a 103-year-old that she's being evicted over money?" said Mrs Simpson. "She didn't deserve the awful indignity of being used as a weapon in a financial row."

"I have been 100 per cent grateful to the people at Barnby Court for the care and love they showed her."

"But not being around the Abbeymoor staff, who had been her family for eight years, she just seemed to give up."

Mrs Simpson said her mother never had any regrets and made the most of her long and happy life.

"She lived everyday to the full and looked so content on the day she passed."

"The whole experience has left me very bitter," she added. "But I know she would want me to move on. She would always say 'Life's too short to hold a grudge.'"
