Two local lifeguards have been selected to represent their country in the Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in South Africa.

Tom Nelson and Simon Warne, who are both lifeguards at Rotherham Leisure Complex and Aston-cum-Aughton Leisure Centre, were selected to join the England squad at the end of September.

The young lifesavers are over the moon to be competing against the best in their discipline and are hoping to bring back a gold medal.

Tom said: “The opportunity to travel to South Africa and take part in the Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships is a great achievement and all the hard training has paid off.”

Simon added: “I am ecstatic to be picked to represent England, we have a great team and I am hopeful that we will bring back gold.”

The lifesavers will be put through their paces during the five day competition, taking part in events including an obstacle swim, obstacle relay, line throw, manikin carry, and manikin relay.

Chris Wright, general manager at Rotherham Leisure Complex added: “We are very proud of their achievements we’re confident they will enjoy success with the England team.”
