The recent floods down south were a reminder of the dangers of building housing on flood plains, especially with scientists warning of extreme weather becoming more normal over the coming years.
Only seven years ago this area suffered its very own devastating flooding, with Shireoaks being badly hit.
So it is understandable that residents in Shireoaks have concerns over the impact nearly 200 new homes on their doorstep will have.
At the same time there is a very pressing need for new housing, especially affordable housing, but these pressures cannot not be allowed to outweigh any potential severe environmental impact.
This plan should only go ahead if there is minimal risk.
