Editor’s Comment: More care should have been taken to conceal dead body

Canal alongside Shireoaks Road in Rhodesia where a woman's body was found on 6th March

The story of the woman who was found dead in the canal at Rhodesia is a tragic and disturbing one.

Tragic that the poor woman lost her life, and disturbing that her body was left on the side of the canal - albeit covered in a sheet - in view of the public for more than two hours.

The Guardian were sent photos of the scene by passers by, images that clearly showed the body.

Anyone passing the scene would have no doubt been distressed by what they saw.

Of course, it is not practical for every police car to carry a tent or screen for such an eventuality.

Indeed, this was the mitigation police gave for not full screening the deceased.

However, you would imagine such equipment is stored at Worksop police station, which is just 10 minutes drive from Rhodesia.

So this does not explain why the body was left how it was for more than two hours.

In any case, surely the scene could have been secured more thoroughly.

The police do a great job, but on this occasion I think mistakes were made.

Finally, I’d like to offer my condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
