Editor’s Comment: Jail should be mandatory for child sex offenders

It seems we live in a country where a man can admit sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl, and then not have to go to prison for this truly vile crime.

I haven’t been to law school, I haven’t sat the bar, and I’m not a judge, but sentence handed out to a Harworth paedophile this week just doesn’t seem right.

In fact, it actually makes me very angry.

By not jailing these people, what sort of message is being sent out?

I understand each case is different, and there are always many factors judges have to take into account when sentencing criminals.

That said, it doesn’t mean a defendant’s age or health should be used as a get out of jail free card.

This poor little girl will have to live with what happened to her for the rest of her life.

The mental and emotional scars she has suffered might never go away.

There is also the trauma it will no doubt have had on her family.

So although I do believe it is important and fair to take into account the personal circumstances of a defendant, more importance should be put on the victim.

Sexual abuse of children has got to be one of the most despicable crimes there is.

A prison sentence should be mandatory.
