The closure of popular sandwich shop and butchers Bird’s back in March was a shock to everyone in the town.

Bird’s was one of the most well-known names in Worksop, and had been operating for more than 100 years.

They have channeled the injustice they felt when they lost their jobs into something positive

It always seemed to be full of shoppers - both buying meat from the butcher’s and choosing fillings for their lunchtime sandwich.

Many of us who live and work in the town were left wondering where on earth to go for their sandwich at lunchtime.

But of course the closure was a much bigger shock for Bird’s loyal staff - some of whom had worked in the shop for many years.

A group of them say they were told at short notice that the business was closing and they were out of a job.

It must have felt like a kick in the teeth after years of hard work and good service to the people of Worksop.

But now a determined group of former Bird’s staff have picked themselves up and decided to go it alone by opening a new sandwich shop in town.

They have channeled the injustice they felt when they lost their jobs into something positive.

I am sure the town will wish them every success in this new venture.
