East Midlands: Flood advice for homeowners after heavy storms hit region

With heavy storms occurring and weather warnings being issued across many parts of the United Kingdom, RICS East Midlands calls on homeowners to check that they have all their flood protection measures in place and to prevent additional problems by making sure things such as gutters and drains are cleared of blockages.

Homeowners and especially those in areas prone to flooding should ensure that they have all their flood protection measures – such as flood-proof doors and windows, and non-return valves to the drainage system – in good working order. Failure to do so could prove extremely costly and it could take a long time to rectify any issues.

RICS East Midlands recommends that homeowners consult the RICS Flooding Guide, a free publication designed to help the public prevent and deal with the consequences of flooding. Furthermore, anybody looking for advice as to what preventative measures are appropriate to their property should contact a local Chartered Surveyor.

“From providing advice on flood risk to managing insurance claims, and providing reports and documentation for insurers or mortgage lenders, a chartered building surveyor is the ideal professional to consult with regards to flood protection,” says Richard Baddeley, of Conwy’s Richard Baddeley & Co, a chartered surveyor and a member of the RICS Flooding Working Group.

“Most importantly, they can also help with recommending appropriate solutions as well as arranging and supervising any required flood resistance and resilience works to ensure the most adequate protection.”

Alan Cripps, RICS Associate Director, commented: “The impact of flooding can be absolutely devastating. It is essential, therefore, that homeowners do all they can to protect their properties from flooding with the aid of flood protection measures, especially those in high flood risk areas. Anybody who needs advice as to what to do to protect their home can download a free guide to help understand prevention and how to deal with flooding”
