To mark the 150th anniversary of Dobbies garden centres, staff have pledged to cycle part of a 2,000 mile circuit as part of nationwide event.
The Barlborough branch, on Highwood Way, has its own five-strong team which is rolling out from 7am, on Thursday, June 18, and aims to complete a 120mile route to the company’s Northallerton branch, in North Yorkshire.
Nearly 300 staff from every one of Dobbies’ 35 stores nationwide have volunteered to cycle a total of more than 2,000 miles between each of the stores over a 21 day period.
A bespoke commemorative baton will be passed between riders at different stages of the tour.
The shortest distance between stores is Milngavie and Braehead at only eight miles, and the furthest is 140 miles, which is from Ponteland to Edinburgh.
The Cycle Tour will be raising money for local charities who are close to each stores’ hearts.
The ride, which is slightly longer than the Tour de France and just over twice the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats, will take in the most southerly store, Ashford in Kent, and the most northerly, in Inverness.
The first cyclists set off from Dobbies’ Edinburgh store on Sunday, May 31.
Andy King, Managing Director of Dobbies, said: “To mark this amazing milestone of 150 years of trading, hundreds of our staff have volunteered to take part in Dobbies’ Charity Cycle Tour Around the UK to raise money for a charity that is close to their hearts.
“We aim to complete more than 2,000 miles in just over 21 days, and would urge people all around the country to dig deep and donate money to our very worthwhile local causes.”
The Barlborough branch is aiming to raise money for Chesterfield-based Ashgate Hospicecare.
