Notts residents are being warned about a family of conmen targeting older people across the county by using a series of door-to-door tactics.
The county council’s Trading Standards team is currently investigating one family whose tactics account for about a quarter of all recent doorstep crime complaints received by the team.
The family members or their trading names cannot be named for legal reasons, but the authority is urging people not to use their services.
Tactics include sob stories about struggling to make ends meet due to the bad winter and offering to cut back trees and lay driveways.
They are also known to try and win the confidence of victims by acting like their friend and doing small jobs and favours.
And they sometimes doorstep call, claiming to be either Trading Standards approved or a Buy with Confidence scheme member.
Other times they have taken on small jobs like washing down driveways or painting garages at a reasonable price, then expanded the work by finding damp on walls or offering roof coatings.
To report a rogue trader contact the Citizens Advice line on 0845 040503. To check if a Buy with Confidence trader is genuine call Notts County Council on 01623 452005.
