And spectators were treated to hots dogs, burgers, teas and coffee.

The event was very well attended with eight teams of six battling for the Memorial cup.

The winning team were captained by Hayden Denman, the youngest son of Hughie, and the trophy awarded by Hughie’s mum Molly.

Hughie’s family would like to thank everyone who attended and would like to say a big thank you to the Roses Sports ground for the kind donation of the pitch and facilities and to Dean and staff at the Peacock for accommodating the after football festivities.

So far, the total amount raised is in the region of £1,200 but it is expected to be more over the next few days.

Ian Hughes who helped organise the day said: “It was a wonderful day with wonderful people.

“Hughie’s mantra was its nice to be nice and he would have enjoyed the day immensely.

“Hayden has always wanted to get something set up and do something for his dad.

“Hughie had a massive circle of friends and everyone was keen to get involved.”

Ian is hoping this is something that could become an annual event to honour Hughie’s memory.

Hughie sadly died from a brain injury and Neurocare were a great help to his family and friends during that difficult time.
