A RETFORD family were given the honour of officially opening a new shop in the town on Friday.

Laura Davies, 26, and her sister Faye, 20, cut the ribbon outside the Family Bargains store in Moorgate.

The sisters had entered the retailers competition asking them to say why they loved the festive season.

After receiving more than 90 entries, store bosses couldn’t pick between two entries - so crowned both the winners.

Laura’s entry said her sister Faye, who has a rare condition called Tuberous Sclerosis, starts looking forward to Christmas after her birthday on 2nd June.

Each year she asks Santa for the same thing, adding that it is so ‘special and unique’ that their Christmas has stayed the same for 16 years.

Also winning were marketing executive Steve Betts, 32, and his partner Hayley Jenkins, 32, from Retford, who wrote their entry in 99 seconds over a drink at their local pub.

They said: “I love Christmas because...C - Carols, H - Hangover! R - Rudolph, I - Indigestion (uurgh), S - Snow, T - Turkey, M - Mistletoe, A - Advent Calendar, S - Santa (of course!).

Both winners were given £100 to spend at the shop, which has created 30 new jobs.
