Bassetlaw: Sixties rock legend Dave Berry to cycle the length of the Chesterfield Canal for charity

Sixties rock legend Dave Berry, famous for classic hits like The Crying Game, will be cycling the full 46 miles of the Chesterfield Canal on Tuesday, 8th April to raise funds for the Chesterfield Canal Trust.

Dave will be accompanied by his daughter, Tania Colley, and a friend, Jeff Troops.

Dave, who also had big UK hits with songs like Mama, Little Things and Memphis, Tennessee, is no stranger to such events as last year, he walked all 40 miles of the Limey Way and raised £1,600 for the MS Society in Chesterfield.

He made contact with the Chesterfield Canal Trust whilst taking his granddaughter on a Santa Special cruise last Christmas where he was impressed by the work that their volunteers do and decided to help.

“We’re really grateful to Dave for doing this and we want to thank him very much,” said Rod Auton of the Canal Trust.

“When he came on our Santa Special cruise, he got talking to the volunteers there and from there he asked if he could do something to help.”

“Quite often, you hear people say things like that and then you never hear from them again, but Dave has been true to his word and he got in touch with us last month to tell us he wanted to do this.”

“We think it will take him five our six hours to do the whole length of the canal and luckily the path is quite flat for much of the way.”
