Police say the northbound carriageway of the A1 south of Newark will remain closed for most of today (Wednesday 19th June 2031) after a fatal crash.

Both carriageways are currently closed as investigations continue. But it is hoped the southbound lanes will reopen before 12 noon.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible. Diversions are in place.

The crash happened at around 5.30am on the northbound carriageway near Long Bennington.

A van was in collision with a white Volvo lorry, believed to have ben carrying gas canisters.

The impact caused a fire resulting in a large plume of smoke obscuring both carriageways. The road surface is also damaged.

The occupants of the van were pronounced dead at the scene, while the 60-year-old lorry driver was shaken but uninjured.

Diversions are in place at the junctions with the A52 and A46.
