SPECIAL Branch detectives are investigating a death threat made to Bassetlaw MP John Mann – on a page torn out of the Worksop Guardian.
Mr Mann was "horrified" by the threat to kill him, which arrived by post at the House of Commons on Monday.
The
page was torn from the 1st October issue of the Guardian, featuring Mr Mann's weekly column, where he voiced his support for the Government bid to ban foxhunting.
Scrawled across the page in biro are the words 'We Know Where You Live – You Will Be Killed'.
"I was horrified when I opened the letter," said Mr Mann this week.
"While I suspect it is the work of cranks, an MP's staff member was murdered in Cheltenham, so every threat like this has to be taken seriously."
"I have passed it on to Special Branch and they are looking into it."
He revealed that he had also suffered other attacks since he came out in support of the foxhunting ban.
"I've had excrement thrown at my house and my car has been scratched," said Mr Mann.
"These people are not pleasant and there is a vocal minority who have been making life uncomfortable for a number of MPs over the foxhunting vote."
"The trouble is, it is not a black and white issue and there are extremists on both sides of the fence."
Security has been stepped up at Mr Mann's office in Worksop and at his home in Bassetlaw.
Mr Mann, who is married with three children, said he would not be intimidated by the threats.
"It's sad when people don't have the guts to protest politely and sensibly about an issue and resort to these kind of tactics," he said.
"But they won't deter me from my job as Bassetlaw's MP. I won't be stopped."
