IT'S that time of year once again where teenagers up and down the country are going back into school to open up an envelope and see how well they've done in their GCSEs.
Although it may only be a single letter, it's an important one as these letters form grades which can shape a young person's future.
Some people will receive top marks and will be able to do whatever they wish whereas others won't make the grade
and wonder what to do next.
The choices available are wide and varying whatever your results so there is something for everyone:
• You may decide that you want to continue in full time education and study A Levels at a sixth form or further education college.
This will provide you with more qualifications that look good to an employer as well as leaving you with the option of going to study at university to get a degree.
• Aside from the further education colleges, there are a number of establishments that offer vocational courses.
These colleges allow students to have a more practical approach to learning and the chance to gain NVQ qualifications.
The application process for sixth forms and colleges will have already passed earlier in the year so if you get the required grades then you can take up the place.
• If you didn't make the grade to take up the place, don't worry.
Connexions, the career advice centre for young people, has set up a website www.mychoicenotts.com, which includes a section called 'FE Clearing'. This section lists all the further education places that are still available in the Notts area.
• Alternatively you may decide that you'd rather learn skills on the job through an apprenticeship.
A number of employers offer apprenticeships, particularly in the practical industry, which will allow you to learn skills and do practical courses whilst working.
If you fancy an apprenticeship then it's best to get in touch with companies that you're interested in to see if they can offer you one.
• There is an opportunity for you to enter the world of work simply with GCSEs.
As long as you have 5 A* to C grades then there are plenty of part and full time jobs available.
If you were unable to achieve these grades then the best way to get into employment is through an apprenticeship where you can learn skills on the job.
• If none of this suits you and you are dissatisfied with your grades then there is a possibility of retaking your GCSEs.
Several colleges and your school offer you the chance to retake your GCSE subjects to improve your overall grade.
If this is something you wish to pursue then it would be best to speak to Connexions or your teacher.
You might want to speak to someone individually about your results and what to do next. If you want to, then there are a number of different people who are available for you to talk to:
• Your school teachers will be happy to issue advice and assistance on results day.
• Connexions are on hand to issue impartial careers advice through freephone 0808 001 3219, www.connexions-direct.com or via text on 07766 413 219.
• Alternatively you can contact your local Connexions branch - Worksop can be called on 01909 473 165, Rotherham on 01709 821 184 and Retford on 0845 600 2234.
• There is also the MyChoiceNotts service, set up by Connexions, providing a range of careers advice and the FE Clearing process.
They can be telephoned on 0800 093 8351 or through the website www.mychoicenotts.com.
• The government has also set up a telephone hotline issuing advice on your exam results and the future. They can be telephoned free of charge from landlines on 0808 100 8000 up until Saturday 25th August.
Whatever your results this summer, there are a wide range of options available for you in the future.
