A MAN who has spent 34 hours barricaded in a Carlton house has given himself up to police and is now in hospital.
The house on Windsor Gardens has been surrounded by police since 9am yesterday.

Tension has been mounting all day with armed police and paramedics still surrounding the property.

Supt Russ Foster, of Worksop Police, told the Guardian that the siege was brought to a close at about 6.20pm when the man surrendered himself to police.

"The man was in custody at Worksop police station where a medical practitioner assessed him and he has now been taken to hospital," he said.

"It was the ideal way to end it as we did not use any force and he surrendered to us."

"He threw the sword out of the window and the other weapons and gave himself up."

"He is exhausted as he has not slept while he has been in the house and has only eaten the food we were able to bring to him."

An eye-witness to the end of the 34-hour-long siege saw the action unfold from the roof of his garage.

"The man came outside with his hands on his head and said 'I surrender'," said Ben Pemberton, 19.

"I could see it all from where I was. It was quite exciting."

Notts Police first received an emergency call to the incident at just after 9am on Sunday when a distressed woman, who lives at the Windsor Gardens' address, said a man was preventing her from leaving the house with her child.

The man, who has been in the house since yesterday morning, was in possession of a samurai sword and other bladed instruments.

Police led a man, woman and young child to safety from the house yesterday but he refused to leave, threatening to do himself harm.

Specialist hostage negotiators have been on the scene since yesterday in an effort to reach a peaceful solution.

As the siege went on, concern began to grow among nearby residents as they listened to many hours of comings and goings.

A 15-year-old, who lives on nearby Willow Avenue, was too scared to leave his house this morning.

"It's scary watching all the police cars come and go. Everyone is talking about it and there are all sorts of rumours," said.

His mum, 37, shared her son's worries about what was happening.

"It's the first time I have ever experienced anything like this and I hope it's the very last," she said.

Due to the lethal weapons in the man's possession, the armed response unit were called and remained vigilant at the scene until the siege ended at 6.20pm today.

I think enough is enough now, the police should get things under control and get this man out, so that people can get on with there lifes, instead of it being on hold for another day!

I can fully understand the police having to take things slowly, however, there are other people involved, who are not wishing to be, and i think the police should think and look at things from there point, ie: having to stay out of there homes for another day/night,not being able to go to work and general upset.

If this man wants to hurt himself, let him, who's paying for all these police, fire engine, dogs etc - US and certainly not this man i bet!!!!

It is nice to know that there are so many emergency services available in Carlton when they are needed. But it is a shame that they cannot just go and bring the situation to the end ASAP. I feel sorry for those involved and hope their ordeal is over as soon as possible.
