THIS week’s Archive Corner picture shows Worksop Town Football Club team members in the Gaiety Restaurant in London on 11th January 1908.
They were enjoying a meal hosted by Bassetlaw’s Liberal MP Frank Newnes, who is believed to be the man right in the centre at the top of the table.
He had invited the players to dine out with him after their FA cup first round match against Chelsea, which Worksop lost 9-1.
Current Bassetlaw MP John Mann had the photo given to him by Mrs Storey, of Worksop, who was going to throw it away.
John’s wife Jo said: “She found the picture in her outhouse or loft and was going to get rid of it but then she offered it to John because she knew he was very supportive of Worksop Town and he said he would definitely have it.”
“All the players are looking quite solemn, probably because they had lost.”
“Frank must have decided to invite them to dinner because they were in London.”
Do you have any more information about the picture, or do you have an ancestor who was at the match that day?
Perhaps you can name one or more of the players? Or perhaps you have more memories of the Tigers to share.
If so please get in touch and let us know, and send in your own old photos to share with Guardian readers.
