THIS week’s Archive Corner picture shows children having fun in the bathing pool at Langold Lake.

The photo was brought in by Guardian reader Derek Foster, of Common Lane, Harworth, who remembers spending many happy summers there with his friends.

He thinks the picture was taken during the 1930s or 40s.

“I think it must be that sort of period by the looks of the bathing costumes. I was born in 1934 and that’s the kind of thing we wore,” he said.

Mr Foster, now 77, grew up in Langold and went to Langold Dyscar School.

He said: “The pool was right next to the lake and sometimes we went in the lake as well, and then got back in the pool.”

“We went to the pool nearly every day, we were never away from it.”

Mr Foster said the bathing huts seen at the back of the picture had been removed.

He said the man wearing a waistcoat and flat cap, standing on the rockery to the left of the children, was the caretaker.

The pool is now derelict and a steel fence has been put up between it and the lake.

Mr Foster said he backed plans to bring the pool back into use as part of a £1m revamp of the country park.

“It’s what the children of Langold are missing,” he said.
