His oldest sister started work on Clumber Estate when she left school as a chalet maid and met her future husband there who worked in the blacksmiths and farrier shop. His name was Sid Bowley and his regular Saturday morning job was to row out to the sailing ship The Lincoln and pump out water as the ship was leaking. When Sid was made redundant he started work at Haunches Blacksmiths at Ranby. After the war Sid became the village blacksmith and farrier at Tickhill until he retired aged 80 and died at 90 years old.
