PROUD rescue workers from Rotherham Rescue Station display life-saving equipment which is all part of a day’s work back in 1949.

Pictured left to right are: T. Clark, R. Dunn, F. Friel, B. Young, G. Roberts and J. Blower. Mr Blower, who kindly loaned us this photo, left school in 1933 aged 14 to work at Shireoaks Colliery before employment at Manton Colliery in 1935. After six months spent in the Boys Service, Leicester Regiment in 1937, he returned to the pit at Steetley the year after. He was called up to serve in the Army at the start of war in 1939 before returning to the pits in 1946 and then employment at the Glassworks.
