Sunday carvery is jewel in the Crown

TO CELEBRATE Mothering Sunday last weekend, my family and I wanted to sample a traditional roast dinner, so we headed for Creswell's popular Rose and Crown pub for a carvery.

The Rose and Crown is exactly what you would expect - it's a traditional village pub. It has not been re-vamped with trendy Ikea-style furniture or leather sofas and candles.

When my family and I arrived at the pub last Sunday, it was apparent that many others had had the same idea as us. Families, from new born babies and grandparents, were enjoying Mother's Day at the Sheffield Road pub and were excitedly tucking into mountains of food.

When we were shown to our table, we quickly realised that there was very little room between our table and the table behind us.

After taking our seats, many of us were practically touching the chairs of the diners behind us. Not exactly the best environment in which to tuck into a massive carvery.

After paying for our meals and stocking up on drinks, it was time to visit the chef, who was eagerly awaiting customers at the hot buffet-style carvery. Diners could choose from three meats - turkey, pork or beef.

While many in our party opted to try all three meats, I decided to sample the turkey and beef, and a cheeky little helping of crunchy crackling to boot.

After piling the meat onto my plate, it was time to see what vegetables were on offer. Diners could fill their plates with creamy mash potatoes, fresh garden peas, carrots and cabbage.

And my favourite Yorkshire puddings were available at an abundance, as were roast potatoes and a rich, thick gravy.

The gravy was dark, rich and tasty, and tasted amazing drizzled over mountains of mash and perfectly-cooked juicy vegetables.

As for the meat, the beef was slightly over-cooked for my personal taste, but the turkey was cooked to perfection and was melt-in-your-mouth moist.

While the abundance of meat and veg defeated my appetite, the majority of my family ate every morsel on their plates, and they could not speak highly enough of the quality of food they had just tasted.

And the children in our party were content with the child-friendly sausage and chips they were served.

It was generally agreed that the amount of succulent slices of meat and servings of veg that diners get for just 5.95 per carvery, was excellent value.

Coming in a under 6 per head, the carvery is an absolute bargain. It would cost you twice as much to produce at home, and would involve hours of slaving over a hot stove and scrubbing dirty pots.

The decor won't turn heads, but that's not what the Rose and Crown is about. It's a traditional, family-friendly pub that has warm, welcoming staff and a very pleasant atmosphere.
