The Crossing to host Cantamus Girls Choir
RENOWNED Cantamus Girls Choir will appear at The Crossing in Worksop on Saturday 13th June.
The choir of 10 to 13-year-olds will be performing as the Training Choir, directed by Ann Irons, as part of a ‘Focus on Young Musicians’ series of public concerts.
Appearing alongside the choir are two young professional soloists from the Covent Garden Royal Opera House Chorus; Elizabeth Kay and Lee Hickenbottom.
A spokesman for The Crossing said the Training Choir would show the audience one way of arriving at a professional singing career.
“These young singers make an amazing sound,” he said. “And it's a real pleasure to be able to demonstrate via the inclusion of Elizabeth Key how the Training Choir can pave the way to an eventual professional singing career.”
“It's also great to see and hear Michael Neaum involved as the accompanist and arranger, having previously occupied that role for many years with the Senior Choir,” he added.
Mr Neaum, an experienced accompanist in piano and harpsichord, has worked with nationally and internationally renowned singers alike, and was the regular accompanist for Cantamus for 15 years, appearing on television with the choir.
Primary schools across the land will be familiar with the Training Choir’s work – they appeared on a ‘Sing Up!’ CD which was circulated as part of a government initiative to encourage singing.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Key, who hails from Mansfield, rose through the ranks of the Cantamus Training and Senior Choirs, before beginning her professional career.
Ann Irons meanwhile, has worked as Head of Music at High Oakham School, amd as leader of the Mansfield Music and Drama Festival representative, St John's C of E Primary School, before her current position at Nottingham High School for Girls, as well as a private teaching practice.
She is also a regular conductor for the National Youth Choir of Greart Britain, for girls aged 11 to 16, and conducted them in the Choir’s 25th Anniversary Concert in Birmingham Symphony School.
The choir, which was founded by Pamela Cook in 1968 and soon experienced success after an adjudicator at a local competition advised them to enter international choral competitions.
Since then, the choir has gone from strength to strength, appearing nationally at the Palace Theatre and the Albert Hall, on the BBC and Richard and Judy, as well as at local venues in Notts.
Tickets for the event cost 4-8 and can be booked via The Crossing’s welcome desk, by phone on 01909 475421, or via email on info@crossingmusic.org
