Exotic dancing in Bawtry

AN EXOTIC taste of eastern promise awaits audiences at The White Swan Hotel, Bawtry, next Friday 9th November.

Seven dancers from the Isle Dance Company and The Shimmy Chicks will descend on the venue to perform a range of exotic dance styles, from oriental and Egyptian beledi to Bollywood and burlesque.

The family show also includes a Morrocan-style buffet with Turkish delight and coffee.

Showcasing her own talent will be Worksop Guardian training developer Jacky Oruc, who also teaches classes in Misterton, Gainsborough and Doncaster.

She got the belly dancing bug when she took it up after hurting her neck around nine years ago.

"I became completely hooked," she said. "I used to be a keen horserider, but I couldn't do that afterwards. I had to find a suitable exercise that was also enjoyable, and belly dancing was that."

Jacky said that belly dancing – also known as raqs sharqi – is a beautiful ancient art form which gives expression to female strength and sensuality, and appeals to women from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Traditionally learned within the family and performed at weddings and social gatherings in the Middle East, the dance has become increasingly popular in the west as an effective and enjoyable exercise accessible to women of all ages, shapes and sizes.

"Unlike ballet, you don't need to be a certain shape to do belly dancing," she said. "And you can be at any fitness level. It's all about interpreting the music as you feel it."

Jacky's husband, who is from Turkey, will also be performing a Turkish folk dance.

Tickets for the night on Friday 9th November are priced at 10, or 5 for children, and can be purchased by calling 01777 817206.
