Bell tolls for those who enjoy finer things in life
FOR those who enjoy the finer things in life, I'd recommend a trip to Retford's Ye Olde Bell.
For tucked away in the unlikely location of Barnby Moor is an oasis of sophistication.
On arrival at the newly refurbished hotel, my partner and I were greeted by friendly down-to-earth staff who showed us to our room – the lavishly furnished Bowness Suite (225 per night) although other rooms start from 90 for a single, and 125 for a double.
As well as a tasteful classic look, the room also had a stylish four-poster bed complete with wall-mounted flat screen television – and this was all overlooking the immaculately cultivated grounds.
During our Friday night stay, guests and visitors stopped in for a few drinks and were treated to relaxing live music in the bar area from a talented lounge singer.
And over in the restaurant there were a variety of treats on the menu – including plenty of vegetarian options.
I started my meal with a smooth carrot, coriander and ginger soup which was delicious, and the portion was more than enough. My partner opted for the black pudding and roasted beetroot salad which also went down nicely.
The starters ranged from around 4.50 to 7.50 and were well worth the money.
For a main course I opted for aubergine cannelloni, which was divine, and my partner had a giant T-bone steak which came to just over 23.
All the food on the menu was very reasonably priced, and delicious when it came.
The hotel chef also got a thumbs up for the full English breakfast which came with all the trimmings you would expect – including hash browns and black pudding.
The Olde Bell offers an extensive wine list with house wine starting at 13.50.
Or for a special occasion, such as a lottery win, 75 could buy you a 35ml slug of the real creme de la creme of Cognac.
Overall, if you like oversized glasses of wine, log fires in the winter, or a cool glass of Pimms in the summer, and you can afford it, then this is the hotel for you.
If you are an esteemed businessman trying to wine and dine a client, or the happy couple looking for a classy venue for your wedding reception, Ye Olde Bell has it all.
