Bassetlaw arts fest offers diverse thrills

AN EXTRAVAGANT arts festival will be kicking off in Bassetlaw tomorrow, promising over two weeks of diverse entertainment.

‘Fabulous Arts in Bassetlaw’, a Bassetlaw Council initiative now in its second year, aims to promote art among local people and celebrate diverse talent in the area.

Coun Keith Isard, cabinet member for community prosperity, said the event would feature something for everyone, including a craft fayre each Sunday in Retford Market Square.

“The aim of the festival is to address important issues such as regeneration and learning,” he said. “As well as to increase the range and number of opportunities to participate in the arts throughout the district.”

Set to open with a bang, the festival kicks off with the Misterton Village Gala, which this year has an American theme, to raise funds for local good causes and the Parish Church, while a week-long series of Make A Picture workshops takes place at The Harley Gallery in Welbeck.

Big names are also in attendance, as Terry Waite performs with Warrington Male Voice Choir the same night of the Rainbow Forest performance at the Acorn Theatre.

Meanwhile, the Eloise Short Quartet will dazzle audiences at Worksop Town Hall from 7pm, after performances on BBC Radio 2 and Keswick Jazz Festival 2008.

Band Leader, Eloise Short, said she was looking forward to returning to the area, after the band played in Bassetlaw last year.

"I'm really looking forward to returning to Bassetlaw this year,” she said. “We had a fantastic time when we played in last year's Fabulous Arts, so when we were invited back this year to play Worksop Town Hall I was thrilled to say yes.”

“I've seen just how much festivals like this benefit the local businesses and community - it can have a hugely positive effect on the local economy.”

“Bassetlaw is such a beautiful place - I really do hope this festival continues to grow and is around for many years to come.”

Attractions are planned in for Retford, Worksop, Misterton, Sutton-cum-Lound and Mattersey, and a range of big cultural names have been announced for the event, including renowned Zimbabwean song and dance group, Black Umfolosi 5.

The acapella and dance group will be performing with their trademark energy at the Acorn Theatre on Saturday 11th July at 7.30pm.
