Tribute to Les Taylor, 87, a real diamond geezer
WHAT a fantastic character Les Taylor was, and what a sad loss to Worksop when he finally passed on last week, aged 87.
For many years, Les was the 'handyman' at the Guardian, and brought his own special methods with him as he repaired the plumbing, put up shelves, cleaned up the yard and so on.
When asked to do anything slightly more complex, like rebuild a brick wall (knocked down by an errant ranting old columnist one foggy morning), his enthusiasm knew no bounds.
It certainly knew more than he did about brickwork, that's for sure.
His finished effort looked like a dramatic moment in Kerplunk, frozen in time.
And yet it still stands today – an army tank wouldn't shift it.
To those who knew him he was an old fashioned gentleman.
The kind of bloke you see glimpses of in the youth of today, but I'm not so sure tomorrow's generation of Les Taylors know quite what it takes to be loved and respected by so many. Let's hope they follow his example.
Good old Les... a diamond in a sea of pebbles.
