Crowds gather outside Worksop Market Place for the annual tree lighting ceremony back in 1954.

The switch on was performed by the Mayoress Mrs L. McQ Seymour and pictured at the centre of the photo are the choir.

During this year in 1954, White Christmas by Bing Crosby was on our screens and The Queen’s Christmas broadcast came at the end of a year in which Her Majesty and Prince Philip had travelled around the world, from Bermuda to Uganda.

A child could expect to receive an apple, satsuma and five shillings in their Christmas stockings, whilst dinner consisted of a chicken as turkey was too expensive.
